Travelling Tanners

This game needs no introduction... which is handy as I have only just had time to post the ad fot it! Leatherhead make the much awaited trip into Kent to Cray Wanderers in the Second Qualifying round of the FA Cup. Last season the same trip seemed "easy" but we lost a 3-0 lead to tie the game. It couldn't happen again... could it?

Directions

Leaving the M25 at Junction 4, follow the A21 to Bromley and London for approximately four miles and then fork left onto the A232 signposted Croydon/Sutton. At the second set of traffic lights turn right into Baston Road (B265), following it for about two miles as it becomes Hayes Street and then Hayes Lane. Bromley F.C. is on right hand side of the road just after a mini roundabout. Nearest Train Station: Bromley South (BR).

Horsham YMCA 0 - 3 Tanners

Leatherhead eased past the league's new boys in an entertaining game that they largely dominated as it was a case of young men against boys. Dave Stevens got all three but much of the story was the service he received to get them.

The first was almost a carbon copy of our opener against Molesey as Stevo rose to glance the ball in from a Sargent freekick. The second was down to MCS's trickery and unselfish play as he squared to Stevens to give him an open goal MCS had a similar chance but the 'keeper had smothered it before he could go round him.

The second half saw YMCA grow in confidence using their crosses and hitting the bar and forcing a good save from a free kick. Perhaps six months ago this would have been a game that Leatherhead would have conspired to through away, but with Holmes in the middle controlling the pace of the game we have a new resilience.

After we had weathered the storm the chances came again. This time Stevo didn't need any help as he worked his way into the box and was brought down for a penalty. If he had finished it with his left foot it would have been the perfect hattrick.

Travelling Tanners

Leatherhead make their first journey to one of the league's new boys, Horsham YMCA. A part from the league our other connection is that we both faced Molesey in the FA Cup.

They are sitting pretty in midtable at the moment and have a few players to watch. Last year I saw a midfielder who turned out to be an ex-Norwich youth player. Playing along side many some players that now grace the Premiership but a knee injury left him behind. I asked Dave Harlow to tap him up but he thought better of it.

Kick off at 3pm - see you there!

Directions
The road you need is just a bit further up from Horsham's Queen Street ground. Gorings Mead is found on the Brighton Road, heading out of town under the railway bridge, pass he Queen's Head pub on your right and then after about 150 metres look for the 'YMCA' sign directing you to turn right into Gorings Mead.

The ground is right at the end of the road. Their website tells me there is NO spectator parking in Gorings Mead and spectators are directed to one of the large number of Car Parks, all available within 5 minutes walk from the ground.

Tanners 3 - 0 Molesey

While Harry Rednapp and Sam Allardyce will have a restless night, Chuck Martini suffered his own nightmare tonight which will hopefully lay his ghost of misdemeanors past to rest and let us focus on the important things. Just how well we played with 10 men.

In an even first half, Leatherhead grew in confidence and a Scott Bennetts cross was met by MCS. Glancing it past the flapping shotstopper and into the side of the net for our opening goal on the stroke of half time.

The second half, by contract, was an action packed affair. Scott Bennetts went in for a usually committed tackle which the referee saw nothing wrong with but took advice from his assistant and the second yellow was issued.

Adam Gray was not going to let this set back spoil the result and made some room for himself to shoot. Some would say it was too near the 'keeper... not the fans behind the goal who watched in amazement as it squirmed through Chuck's hands into the goal.

Molesey by now were desperate. Phil Ruggles, fresh from his drive in some of the best automobile technology ever to come out of Italy, was not having any impact so they committed more upfront. The counter attack became Leatherhead's best friend and a clearance was chased by the impressive Stevo who square unselfishly to Man Of The Match MCS who slotted into the corner.

The fans behind the goal erupted becoming the 11th man and enough to see us through to the next round... sadly to Cray and not the tie we wanted against Winchester who lost on penalties tonight.

Molesey Wars - Part III
The FA Menace

Back to the Grove we go for the last in the trilogy of Molesey encounters and we haven't had it all our own way. It was clear Saturday that the arrival of reinforcements boosted Molesey's battle in midfield while absences upfront limited our attack. However, we will hope to field a full strength line up barring maybe Chippy who appeared to only make his hamstring worse Saturday.

Nothing can be taken for granted though as one slip could see us crash out of a cup that we have such high aspirations for this year.

Kick-off at 7.45 - SEE YOU THERE!

Moles 1 - 1 Tanners

It was a largely forgetable game with neither side creating much. Leatherhead looked dangerous in the opening minutes from a series of freekicks but a midfield packed with Molesey players meant the game was largely disjointed.

The arrival of Dave Stevens off the bench felt like half a goal and it wasn't long before he was through on goal only to blast wide. It was from his pressure that the ball was squared to Adam Gray and his shot was stabbed in by a nervous defender.

With minutes to go the visitors must have thought they had done it only for a ball not to be properly cleared and a Molesey midfielder to strike a powerful shot past the stranded Gibson.

Back here Tuesday then!

Molesey Wars - Part II
May the 4's be with you...

Despite two of the Leatherhead Rebels fleeing the bar muttering "S***! He's big!", we will return in fine voice to face an old foe in the shape of Chuck. FA Cup matches are made of this.

The respectful thing to have done Tuesday was to win by the odd goal, but no. We had to rub their noses in it with four so no doubt they will be back, with five different players (including the lethal Ruggles) to make amends.

Kick off at 3pm - see you there.

Directions
The game is at their ground... not at Fetcham Grove as reported in the Leatherhead Ad! So follow the A3 from London to Hook, then A309 to Marquis of Granby pub, right to Hampton Court Station, turn left for West Molesey, ground one mile on left.

Tanners 4 - 0 Molesey

There was a mixed offering in the starter in this three course meal. Molesey served a cold and watery offering like a poor gazpacho with only one shot that troubled our keeper. Leatherhead on the other hand were bubbling over like the soap of the day... probably pea... on account of our kits.

The first goal came from Joe Sheerin, chasing down a through ball got lucky as the goalies kick rebounded of him and over into the goal.

The second half was all Leatherhead. Sargent maintains his high scoring run with an excellent long range effort. MCS beat the keeper to the ball in the air to head home the third and Read headed home after a great gross from the in form Sargent.

Both teams rested players so all eyes fall on Saturday for the big one!

Molesey Wars - Part 1
A New Hope

Tomorrow night sees the first part of the Molesey Trilogy as we entertain them in the Westview Cup. The last encounter was a high scoring affair with ex-Tanner Phil Ruggles scoring (a hattrick I seem to remember) but with Leatherhead winning the game.

With the FA Cup on the Saturday tomorrow will be a chance to size each other up. The last time there was an encounter of this kind was played before a big FA Cup game Arsenal won 6-1...

Kick off at 7.45pm... see you there!

LEATHERHEAD 1 - 0 CHATHAM TOWN

A sun drenched Fetcham Grove was filled with more noise and excitement than usual with a visit from Bookham Colts under-9s teams. As well as watching the game and playing during the half-time interval, they were treated to a behind-the-scenes visit to the home dressing room where Tanners boss Dave Harlow was preparing his team for this tricky fixture against Ryman League new boys Chatham Town.

For the Tanners, top marksman Dave Stevens had to miss the game with a hamstring strain, and midfielder Gavin Bolger also missed out with a bruised foot.

The visitors from Kent arrived with a record of no losses in their first four games, so the fans were looking forward to a competitive match. The first half however, was a scrappy affair with neither side impressing, although there were one or two half chances.

Neither side asserted themselves in the early exchanges, but in the 10th minute, a good Tanners move finished with Dean ‘Chippy’ Carpenter blasting over from the edge of the 18-yard area. This was quickly followed by a tricky run on the right flank by Scott Bennetts but a defender blocked his cross, and the resulting corner came to nothing.

A great 40 yard cross field pass from Steve Sargent was well controlled by Carpenter on the left edge of the Chatham box, his probing cross caused mayhem in the Chats goal mouth, but no Leatherhead player could convert the chance.

Gradually Chatham were getting more into the game, and a couple of free kicks around the Tanner’s box gave them good opportunities which were snuffed out by a Tanners defence which again showed good understanding and strength.

A couple of half chances for Julien Thompson towards the end of the first forty-five might have given the Tanners the lead, but in fairness neither side showed enough composure on the ball to deserve being in front.

Manager Dave Harlow’s half time team talk looked to have worked as the Tanners started the second 45 looking much more dangerous. Fewer long balls were played, with a more joined-up passing game in evidence. As early as the first minute after the break, superb close work by Thompson followed by a sharp ball across the Chatham box somehow eluded a finishing touch from a Tanners player, and the chance went begging. Thompson quickly followed this with a smart turn and shot, which fizzed just over the Kent side’s cross bar.

The crowd were now witnessing a much more purposeful Tanners approach, and following good work by Marc Charles-Smith they won a corner in the 55th minute. Carpenter took the corner – a pre-planned training ground move – and Steve Sargent drilled the ball home through a crowded penalty area. Cue scenes of both delirium and relief from the Tanners faithful. Sargent had actually scored from the exact same corner move last week at Epsom & Ewell in last week’s FA Cup tie so clearly all the practising was now paying dividends.

The goal forced Chatham to open up and they started to exert pressure on the Tanners defence with No. 7 Darren Smith being at the centre of most of their best chances all afternoon. A curling free kick from Smith was well saved by Tanners keeper Chris Gibson, who looked sound all afternoon.

On the break the Tanners had several more chances to increase their lead, with a mazy run into the Chats danger zone by Charles-Smith being the pick.

But it wasn’t to be, and the Tanners held out for a narrow win, which now lifts them one place to 5th in Ryman League Division One (South). It was by no means a vintage performance but the Tanners have yet to concede a goal at home this season. With the defence providing a sound foundation, the Tanners are already looking like a difficult team to beat, particularly at ‘Fortress Fetcham Grove’

Tanners team: Gibson, Bennetts, Gray, Duncan, Doherty, Holmes, Sargent, Greenaway, Thompson (Sheerin), Charles-Smith (Read), Carpenter

Chatham Are Coming

Our old freinds from Kent are coming in the first League encounter between the two clubs going back as far as I can remember. Hopefully the goals will be more plentiful than the available committee members as prior engagements has deprived us of all but three of them.

I wont go on about the last time we met, that is classic programme material and best left there for you to read during half time but needless to say it was a classic encounter. If it is half as good we'll win 2 - 1.5.

Kick-off off at 3pm.

Tanners Youth 2 - 3 Cobham

The Youth's first home didn't get off to the dream start they had hoped for when Cobham opened the scoring in the first few minutes of the game. Leatherhead responded well and soon controlled the game, leaving Cobham with only long range shots as an option.

They soon turned this dominance into goals, beating the 'keeper on the 15 and 30 minute marks. The latter being a excellent strike on the edge of the box from a poorly cleared corner.

Cobham then began to show their experience at this level and fought their way back and levelled it by half time. The second half was then about hanging on as we failed to get the ball to our front men and we kept hemmed back. The pressure told and the winning goal was nodded home.

The Youth Are In Action

If we could only manage a draw we'd be hosting Epsom & Ewell but we won so tonights Youth fixture can go ahead.

This will be the first home game for the team so get down to the Grove and cheer them on. I assume it will be a 7.30 kick-off...

Epsom & Ewell 0 - 2 Tanners
FA Cup Preliminary Round

Leatherhead eased into the next round on the FA Cup with a goal in each half against our old league rivals, the E's. Leatherhead had the quality to make more of this but the conditions were a leveller and the committed home side got to grips with the high winds and horizontal rain.

There was a big crowd there with the home team showing off their new Colts, an impressive venture with over ten age ranges catered for. Conversely the high pitched cheering did make the game resemble a England U21 international and the chants of "Leatherhead suck" and "The referees a veggie" became a bit tiring even for me.

Luckily the football did the talking and the first goal came from THE corner routine with Sargent firing powerfully past the 'keeper. Joe Sheerin, who partnered MCS, made his first start for the club with Stevens injured. It is fair to say he looked a little off the pace and will need a few more appearances before he can regain his reputation as one of the best strikers at the level. He was replaced at half time by Jamie Read.

The second half was a bit more scrappy with the weather stepping its gale up a notch. MCS was a notable exception who wriggled past defenders for fun. The second goal was scrappy too with a scramble on the line being headed home by Bolger (I think) but no one minded... we were through!

Bring on Molesey!

Travelling Tanners

The road to Wembley starts tomorrow with a visit back at Surrey's tundra as we play Epsom & Ewell at Merland Rise. Tuesday's game was a hard battle with many players feeling the worst for wear. This will certainly be the case upfront with Dave Stevens and Julien Thompson being substituted with injuries that game.

We have plenty of firepower in the form of Sheerin and Read on the bench though which should be enough to see off an Epsom side that has had a pretty tough couple of years since they were relegated.

Directions

Leave the M25 at Junction 8, and head North towards London. After the 3rd roundabout, turn left at the next set of traffic lights into Reigate Road, there is a petrol station at this junction. Continue past Asda supermarket and at the next set of lights, turn left into Great Tattenhams. Take the 3rd left into Merland Rise and you will find Banstead Athletic FC approx 500m up on your left. A large sign is placed outside the shared entrance to Banstead Sports Centre.

Pub Guide

I will be in Epsom prior to the game so if you want to meet up make it known on the message board.
