Croydon Athletic 1 – 1 Tanners
Many did not heed my words of long travel delays and so at 2.30 when it was just Dom and I in the bar we wondered how many had been drawn to the Vase… or to Dickie’s bed where he was laid up ill. By all accounts Pete Bowers was there to nurse him back to health.
Those who eventually made it saw a blistering first half where the visitors could have found themselves six goals the good. Four of the chances fell to Tommy Huttings whose powerful shots were straight at the ‘keeper. As was Andy Martin’s who got injured during his one to one.
On came Dave Stevens and before he could have a touch a Croydon player dived across goal to stop the goalward bound shot from going in with his arm. Stevens’ first touch was therefore to strike the ball down the centre from the spot to make it 1-0. Croydon now faced the task of getting back into the game with just 10 men to boot.
The second half was a different affair. Croydon and got themselves organised with just 10 men and there was almost an air of complacency about the Tanners performance where they only created one real chance. A clever lob from Stevens that went agonisingly wide.
Croydon kept promising to score with their lively striker showing some pace and trickery. He then won a free kick late in the second half on the left. The freekick was swung into the back post where it fell to the right wingers feet to tap in. Where were the central defenders to head the clearance? Where was the left back to track the run? Where are the two points dropped?
A disappointing end to a game where gruesome travel is always endured.
