Corinthians 4 – 1 Tanners
Rod, still on a high after being appointed the new programme editor, chastised me for daring to think we would lose this game even before a ball was kicked. In past years I have tried to make the last away game of the season a fancy dress day. However, considering the backdrop of a hard season and the reality of the venue I decided to leave my nun outfit in the closet.
The writing was on the wall as early as six minutes when a cross seemed to elude France and the header sailed into an unguarded net. A little over 15 minutes later a ball down the centre was allowed to bounce by two centre backs who stood like doormen allowing the striker to run through on goal. Adam France was left to deal with the bouncing ball and was second in every sense as the ball was headed beyond him into the goal and was clattered only to go off injured. Boosey Magic was then to be restricted to just between the sticks as took the gloves to be the replacement 'keeper.
Leatherhead were not out played though. Throughout the game we hit the woodwork twice, fluffed two open goals and had some good shots on goal. The trouble is so did Corinthians.
Despite Billy Marshall giving us some hope at 2-1, the home side managed to miss from about five yards out twice. Their two goal that came in the second half were of no fault of the stand in keeper. We were carved apart with ease.
One of the worlds most valuable stamps obtained its rare status through a printing error and an upside down bi-plane. So, how much then for the programme that states our defence is sorted? Rod could be sitting on a gold mine next season!
